Lord Roworth Reward edition by Carola Dunn Romance eBooks Reviews
This sequel is a continuation of the previous novel Miss Jacobson's Journey. Most of the novel takes place in Belgium on the eve of Waterloo.
It is a lovely, moving story. The author continues her observations of class hierarchy and prejudice and the very early women's movement. It is not heavy handed but flows through the characters and their story.
Very well done and highly recommended.
Like the song says, "A fine romance, my friend, this is. A fine romance with no kisses." That's almost this story, The H and h are just friends, and there is not much in the way of romance, but still I found this a very fine, interesting story and had trouble putting it down. For one thing, you have the setting in Brussels before the battle of Waterloo, making this an interesting description of all that went on before the famous battle. And there is Felix, the hero, an agent for Nathan Rothschild, helping to facilitate the arrival of gold shipments to Wellington. The heroine, Fanny, lives in the same house as Felix. She is sweet, funny and brave and very popular with the soldiers who admire her and treat her with respect. She is a camp follower in Brussels because her brother is a Captain preparing to fight. Felix thinks he wants to marry an beautiful but cold-hearted Lady Sophia, and since he is a Lord, he thinks they suit since they are part of the same circle. Fanny is wonderful, but a commoner. Well, we know how that turns out, but it is still fun to read.
So this is about the 4th book I've read pig hers. The story is great, clean and fun. Very well written, but I did feel like her stories have very abrupt endings. They get together and that's it. In this story I would have loved to see his parents reaction, perhaps a little humor floor the couple in seeing his parents change their tune. Anyway they all drop off suddenly, I always feel like our needs at least one more chapter to conclude all the pieces.
But definitely worth the read.
I like this author. Wish she wrote more, and faster. Need more.
I very much enjoyed the Rothschild Trilogy. The best part about Carola Dunn's novels is her emphasis on good character values as the basis for marriage. Her heroes have excellent characters that are revealed to the heroines in her historical romances. There is a light touch and a sweetness about her novels which make them most enjoyable.
Delightful. You can't go wrong with a Carola Dunn book, Regency or mystery (love her Daisy Dalrymple mysteries). Lord Roworth almost makes a big mistake but fortunately comes to his senses just in time. Enjoy.
