I bought this book last year when I took my father to Fukuoka. It was our first visit to Kyushu. This book was great for giving us a run down on what Fukuoka was all about and handy for planning day-trips to the outer regions. We enjoyed ourselves so much! I credit this book with providing plenty of information in which we picked and planned a fun-filled itinerary that we will remember forever!Product details

Finding Fukuoka A Travel and Dining Guide for the Fukuoka City Area Patrick Mackey 9781484968246 Books Reviews
I would rate this between a 3-4. I will say that there were two restaurant recommendations that were great as well as well as the info on the Asahi Brewery tour. This book is lacking in good maps and there is no index. If there were good maps and an index I would have rated much higher.
Don't waste your money or time on this book as better information is available anyplace on line. While the author seems to be enthralled with Ramon he left out Ipudo which originated in Fukuoka and now has 92 shops world wide including two in New York where a two hour wait is the norm. Also not included was Rositas, a Mexican restaurant that is over 70 years old and a must go to place for almost every star who visits the city. Nat King Cole visited there many years ago as did Andy Williams .....the walls are full of pictures of the whose who in show business in the present day who have visited this small shop. Also Tsundora, a Russian restaurant with a history of over 50 years and Nanak, on the corner of oyafuko street which is the oldest Indian restaurant in town. The city is full of French restaurants with chefs who have studied at three star Michelin restaurants in France. Thai restaurants, over 100 Indian restaurants and and every neighborhood has a Chinese restaurant that will deliver to your door. A waste of money to buy this book and for the unknowing buyer a waste of your time reading it. Fukuoka is the 10th most livable city in the world with over 250 international conferences held here every year....the second largest following Tokyo. Come visit but don't bring this book.
This is a good guide to Japan as a whole. If you want something more specific about a region, buy another guide Tokyo, Kyoto, Kyūshū, etc. You'll find if you try.
Best guide book I could find on Fukuoka! No other guide book is so detailed. It is easy finding guide books for Tokyo and Osaka, but I could not find any on Fukuoka until I chanced on this. The author knows his stuff, and having this book around makes it a lot easier to plan my trip. Maybe more detailed maps would be helpful, but otherwise the book is already good enough.
This is the second tour guide that I have purchased by this author - Osaka Insider was the first. He has lived in both cities, not just visited for a few days, and shares his knowledge and appreciation of Japanese culture and city life with his readers. The material is thoroughly researched and makes an excellent guide for those visiting the region. This is a book by an author who clearly loves Japan.
Eh, in the end I didn't find this all that helpful. It was also a pain in the but to read on my phone, but that's more of a function of the AMZN app.
We are about to visit Fukuoka for the fourth time in 2 years because it is such a bargain coming from Hawaii. Wish we had this book 2 years ago! This even tells you how to get to everything discussed and then gives more help on the website. Even side trips are covered well. Only thing there deserving more coverage in the book maybe is Fukuoka's great aquarium. Thanks for the help, Mr.Mackey!
